An Eastern Region publicity image showing the front end of Met-Camm 'Lightweight' driving trailer third E79273 at Stratford. It was allocated new there in March 1956. DMU

circa March 1956

An Eastern Region publicity image showing the corridor connection on a Met-Camm 'Lightweight' DMU between E79274 and E79058 at Stratford circa March 1956. On the jumper closest the number 4 can be seen painted on the right hand plug. The text on the left vehicle end reads - 25 TONS, 57-0" x 9-3", 72 T., T.O., TWIN' - showing it is a third open in a twin set with 72 third class seats. There is some small text at the very bottom corner, it is unreadable but seems to end in 'SYN' so is probably a paint date. Note the style of water filler pipe with flap, I normally associated this with drinking water for buffet / restaurant cars, and that the DMBS also had the filler pipe, not because it has a toilet but these are for the coolant system. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.

 DMU

circa March 1956

An Eastern Region publicity image showing the middle section of a Met-Camm 'Lightweight' DMU power car, taken at Stratford in March 1956. This was probably to show the underframe equipment, and this is the number one (drivers) side, with the exhaust heading to the rear of the vehicle on the right. The most obvious differences from the 5xxxx series Met-Camms is the different style of radiator and different style of engine air intake oil bath filter (the cylinder on the left of the engine). The vehicle number is unknown, but is likely E79057. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.
